​Shotokan Karate, the most popular & biggest style in Karate, announced their existence in Sabah for the first time in 2013.

​

The association was registered with the the Sabah Sports Commissioner and received the certification from Sabah Sports Commissioner for 'Shotokan Karate Association Of Sabah (SKAS)' on 2nd March 2013.

​​

The certificate was presented by Dato' Mohd Yassin Mohd Salleh of Malaysia Sports Commissioner to SKAS Secretary Mr. Simon Chia, witnessed by  En. Penyuki Matta Deputy Permanent Secretary II of MSN & En. Apui Jan of Sabah Sports Commissioner.

The Shotokan Karate Association Of Sabah board members comprise of a group of committed people who shares the vision of seeing the sport achieve its’ fullest potential in the state, national and international scene.

​

The association was formed on the common vision that sporting excellence can be achieved by creating a sense of strong fellowship in the Karate community from the grass root level.

SKAS is affiliated with Shotokan Karate Of Malaysia which is affiliated to Malaysia Karate Federation (MAKAF).

​

The founding committee is led by Othnel Yabai, (Chairman), Arnold Joibi (Vice-Chairman) Simon Chia (Secretary), Adam Idrus Bunajos (Treasurer) 4 committees members, Rayner Kinsiong, Melinda Giles, David Sigar and Jeanne J Som. ​​A little on the Association Founder

Sensei Simon Chia, 4th Dan
​

The motivation to form this association is driven by his belief that sports, regardless

of its' discipline and practice should focus on character -building

and at the end of the day, unite everyone.

​
Interest in martial arts started during his early teenage years in his hometown,

Lawas, Sarawak. He discovered TID GUNG DO in secondary school, of which he

eventually was elected the President of the Club.

​

Simon then moved to Sabah to continue his studies and together with a couple of

friends, decided to give Karate a try as it was a very popular sport in the state at that

time.



He initially took up training sessions with Sensei Johnny Chong, a well-respected

man who held the 7 times National Kumite Champion title in the 90's.



After a few years hiatus to focus on studies and career, he returned to pursue his passion and trained with Sensei Rayner Kinsiong

whilst being under the supervision of Sensei Richard Ajax of SKA Tamparuli Sabah. During this time, he focused on being a competitive Karatekas and manage to represent the State of Sabah for 3 years (2002, 2003 & 2007). 



After leaving the competitive scene, Simon continued his passion in Karate by taking up instructor courses and later setting up karate clubs around Kota Kinabalu, of which he enjoys thoroughly. As a certified tournament referee, he served as an active member and contributed his voluntary service to Sabah Karate Association in numerous tournaments, championships and events as organising committee over 10 years.



Living in Sabah for more than 30 years and married to a Sabahan, he calls Sabah his home and has aspirations to see Karate, achieve its' fullest potential.
